Donuts

hahaha what a weird post this is.

Now you might be thinking to yourself, why on earth is this girl writing in a blog about indonesia, about donuts? Of  all foods? I can't exactly answer that question but for some reason donuts are one of the popular American/Western foods here, and there are many stores that sell them. I have had many conversations about donuts here, so I thought i'd share my findings.

In Indonesia the two most popular Donut stores are Dunkin Donuts, and J.Co. Often times as well, there will be kids selling traditional donuts in school. I'm positive everyone already knows Dunkin Donuts, seeing as 'America Runs on Dunkin', but maybe someone who hasn't been to southeast asia before doesn't know what J.Co is. J.Co is a Donut Company just like Dunkin Donuts, other than donuts, they sell coffee drinks, mixed frappuccino type drinks, as well as frozen yogurt. It is very good, the main difference to me though is the size of the donut. Which isn't very important if you're not American. I think as an American i'm always trying to get the biggest 'bang for my buck', or in Indonesian, my rupiah. When I see this tiny donut being soldat J.co for 6,000 rupiah (more or less 60 cents), compared to a big American-sized donut being sold at Dunkin for maybe 4,000 or 5,000 (40 or 50 cents) i'm a bit confused as to why a smaller donut costs me more. Its a petty little thing on my mind but it has lead me to ask around the opinons of others.

I'll ask a question like this... kamu lebih suka donut dari Dunkin atau J.co? ( do you like donuts from dunkin or jco better?)

Almost all the answers i've gotten have been J.Co. I continue to ask kenapa? why? (Because honestly, I like dunkin better so i'm curious.)

Most of the answers i've gotten are more or less like this... 'Dunkin's donuts are way too big and sweet, and if I eat one my teeth will be sore after because it is too sweet, if i eat J.Co that doesn't happen.'

Which ok yeah makes sense. But it continues to confuse me why people here can't handle the sweetness of an American donut, when one of the things Jogja is known for is its sweet foods. Literally, tea comes with about two or three spoonfulls of sugar automatically, I honestly think it's sweeter than sweet tea in the south. One of the most famous meals is Gudeg.. chicken and eggs literally marinated for hours in a sweet jakefruit sauce. So why can't anyone handle a simple donut?

I have to say though, J.Co donuts are delicious, and have a more artisan-made feel to them. SO IN CONCLUSION, if I ever find myself craving a donut here, I think i'll go to J.Co because they are very good, and you can't find them in the sates. However.. if I were to be my American self.. feel like I have strong teeth, and want to get the most out of my rupiah, i'll always think Dunkin.

And now, you've just been enlightened on how part of the east-asian world views donuts. Thank you for your time.
