Minggu Kedua

I don’t even know where to begin. So much has happened, ah!!
I’ll start with the most recent happenings. Today is Saturday. In Indonesia, school is Friday-Saturay.. so finally the weekend has begun! I went to school from 7-10:15 today.. On saturdays usually its four hours.. but my class has exams starting monday so we got let out early for teachers and students to start to prepare. On Saturdays, our dress code is the ‘scout’ uniform. It looks like a boy scout troop shirt, and then the girls wear a skirt and guys wear pants.
On fridays, we go to school from around 7-11:30.  The friday uniform is Batik. So as long as your shirt is Batik.. you can wear whatever you want. Girls wear a batik blouse/shirt and a skirt, guys wear a batik shirt with pants. I wore a Batik shirt and my regular blue school skirt.
Tuesday- Thursday, we wear our normal school uniform, girls wear a white button up shirt with a blue skirt… and guys wear the same shirt with blue dress pants.
This thursday, so two days ago, I skipped school because I had to go to the Immigration office and get my visa processed so that I can legally stay here and not be deported… which is a pretty good reason I think to skip school. I still have to go back and pick up my ID sometime next week.. so its been quite a process to become legal here. On Thursday, I also went to sing Karaoke! It was my first time singing karaoke.. I had a blast. I went with my sister and another relative, and then some of their friends. For dinner we went to a famous local restaurant, and it was soo cool. I can’t even describe it.. we ate nasi kucing, (cat rice..) it wasn’t actually cat rice.. but thats what it’s called. It was very good, hard to describe.. but very good. We also ordered a drink, and it was MASSIVE. Again, I forgot what it was called but go look at the picture.. it was ridiculous, and verrryyy good.
Last wednesday was also an interesting day. I went to school, from 7-1:45, wearing the normal uniform, it was a typical day at school. After school, I went with my contact person to the Asia Tri Jogja Arts festival, which was about 40 minutes away towards the mountains by motorcycle . So even though the actual festival was really cool, I thought getting there was even cooler. I saw a lot more of Jogja and i loved going up into the mountains! It became a lot cooler (temperature wise)   as we drove higher.  Not only were we in the mountains but we were also right next to Merapi.. Jogja’s active volcano..! I didn’t get a good look at it though because it was dark, but its crazy to think i’m only 40 minutes away from a massive volcano that may erupt at any time.
Tuesday was pretty relaxed.. I went to school from 7-1:45.. and then relaxed and went to sleep very early haha. Monday was my first day of school. I had to make a little speech type thing at the beginning of the day during the flag ceremony. Although i only know a little bit more now, on monday.. literally all I knew how to say in indonesian was.. ‘my name is julianne, i’m from america’ and ‘i can not speak indonesian’. so when i was told to say ‘saya senang persama anda’ (i am happy to be with you all) i was terrified that I wouldn’t remember and it would be just a huge mess. Luckily it went alright and i said everything correctly. In class, everyone was really excited that I was there.. they all love my ‘barbie’ hair.
Last Sunday, my family, Sabine (another YES student in Jogja) and some other famliy members and I went to the beach! It was about two hours away but it was a beautiful drive. The beach it self was absolutely the most beautufil beach i’ve ever seen.. even out of like pictures and places I haven’t been.. this beach was just amazing. I also drank out of a coconut which was pretty cool.
I’m definitely forgetting half the stuff i’ve done but this I think this gives you a good gist of what i’ve been up to. I’m so lucky to be here and I can’t wait to see & experience more!
